ABOUT

Avenue of the Arts, Inc. has stewarded S. Broad Street’s epic transformation over three decades. What began with a $378 million strategic investment in cultural venues in 1993 has evolved into one of America’s shining examples of urban renewal.

As new venues rose, dilapidated buildings came down, and empty lots transformed into new hotels, residential high-rises, clubs, and restaurants, resulting in a dynamic new neighborhood valued today at $4.4 billion.

THE WHY

Our vision is simple: to transform the Avenue of the Arts into an even greater destination—one that pulses with new life and energy. By enhancing the street’s aesthetics and functionality, making it greener, cleaner, safer, and connected, we’ll spark new investment, energize tourism, and provide a beloved gathering place for the people of Philadelphia. From celebrating sports victories and ringing in the New Year to forging family traditions and capturing life’s milestones with the majestic City Hall as a backdrop, the Avenue of the Arts is the city’s beating heart—where culture, creativity, and community intersect and Philly’s soul sings.

OUR BACKSTORY

In 1993, Mayor Ed Rendell saw beyond South Broad Street’s fading glory to envision something extraordinary. His bold idea: transform a defunct office corridor into a world-class arts destination. His vision redefined Philadelphia’s cultural landscape, attracted billions in private investment, and established Avenue of the Arts as one of the region’s most powerful economic drivers.
